HOW-TO CATCH SNOOK

Snook fishing on a shallow flat in Tampa Bay is possibly some of the most enjoyable fishing in the world! Throughout the year, snook can be found in the shallow flats of the bay. They seek warmer water near boat basins, rivers, and deeper backwater springs during the cooler months. They are crafty, explosive, high-speed leaping demons that pull hard and are probably one of the most common species in the bay area for local fishermen and Tampa fishing charters alike. Snook are known for their difficulty in capturing, combat ability, delicious table fare, broad mouth with extended lower jaw, and distinct black lateral line. They are available in sizes ranging from less than 12” to more than 40”. A Snook’s eyes are placed on top of their head, making it easy for them to ambush their prey from below. They also have a large mouth that has no teeth, which means they have to chew it whole when they eat the bait.

These fish prefer to migrate in summer in schools along the beach. The snooks huddle together in the backwaters and creeks during the winter months to find hot weather. In the colder months, it is best to use a slow moving lure to capture the snook. You want to make sure to use a hook when catching a snook that fits the size of the bait you present. Do not be afraid to play with adjusting your leader size, your leader length and hook size if you notice that you don’t get the hookups you want. Snook is fickle and can react to the most subtle modifications differently at any time. Of course, recruiting an accomplished captain is a shortcut to capturing this trophy fish, so make sure you recruit the right captain for the job.
