HOW-TO CATCH A HOGFISH
This fish is characterized by its long, hog-like snout. Hogfish is one of the most tasty fish in the Gulf of Mexico. These incredible fish fight like soldiers, making for a long yet satisfying day of fishing for the entire family. Hogfish on hook and line are hard to capture but can be achieved using the correct techniques. Most of the Tampa Hogfish hit a maximum length of 36 inches and around 24 pounds. Some hogfish have been known to live up to 11 years, but the majority only live for 6 to 10 years. The hogfish is known to be one of the best warriors out there and can give the whole crew a lot of excitement. Since they are so hard to reel in with a standard hook and line, many fishermen, when appropriate, resort to spear fishing along the coast or reef fishing.
They like to dig around in the coral patches, wrecks and exposed rock regions surrounding the sandy bottom. The bait of choice is tiny new shrimp and/or sand fleas, hands down. It would be ideal to use a medium to heavy spinning rig in the 20 pound test range.
